Indiana Tech women's softball to use New Haven field

Rosa Salter Rodriguez | The Journal Gazette

Indiana Tech's women's softball team will have a home for their home games beginning next spring, with the approval last night of a deal with the New Haven-Adams Township Parks and Recreation Department.

The team is returning to Havenhurst Park's Diamond No. 1 after Indiana Tech provides -- and pays for -- about $40,000 in upgrades so the field will meet new standards for intercollegiate play.

Mike Clendenen, parks department superintendent, said the primary change moves the outfield fence 10 feet farther away from home plate.

Others include extending the fence to the dugouts from the backstop and minor changes in the pitcher's mound and batter's box, said Brian Engelhart, Indiana Tech spokesman.

The parks department would continue to do routine maintenance of the diamond, and at least one additional one used for practices, Clendenen said.

Diamond No. 1 at Havenhurst, 211 N. Rufus St., New Haven, would still be available for summertime youth leagues because Indiana Tech's use of the field would be mostly in the spring, he said.
