Journal Gazette

A well-being check Sunday afternoon on Grace Avenue turned into a barricade situation when the lone occupant of a home, who was wanted on a warrant, retreated into the house and refused to leave, the Fort Wayne Police Department said in a statement.

The standoff happened about 4:20 p.m. in the 800 block of Grace Avenue, where police officers were assisting Department of Child Services employees with a well-being check of a child, police reported.

Members of two special units – the Crisis Response Team and Emergency Services Team – were called to assist with efforts to get the person to surrender, police said.

The person eventually exited and was taken into custody without incident, police said.

No one injured in Brackenridge fire

A fire early Sunday caused minor fire and water damage at a Brackenridge Street home, Fort Wayne firefighters said.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said in a statement.

Firefighters were called about 12:15 a.m. to a home in the 400 block of West Brackenridge on reports of flames from the attic of the home, the statement said. Firefighters found flames mainly on the exterior at the front peak of the two-story home, near an attic window, and they were controlled within nine minutes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fort Wayne police, Neighborhood Code Enforcement and the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority assisted.
