It's been five years since Chad Seewald opened the doors of Sweets So Geek on North Anthony Boulevard, creating chocolates and cakes with a, well, geeky tilt.
But this summer, Seewald will make a big move – shutting the door at the North Anthony Corridor spot and opening in Georgetown Square.
The location in Georgetown Square will be significantly larger – about 1,000 square feet larger to be exact – and allow the bakery to expand the number of cakes it can make. The larger production space will also allow the team to create unique ice cream flavors and desserts.
There will be a devoted space for gaming, classes and meetings. Seewald assures fans that popular movie nights and events will continue.
Seewald began making chocolates and candy as a hobby, starting with a Han Solo in carbonite ice tray. Working in business sales, he would make the candy on the side – selling it at a couple of stores and at comic conventions, festivals and markets. Sweets So Geek began with his custom candy but expanded to desserts, custom cakes and ice cream.
The target date to open the Georgetown location is June 1. The move should not affect any custom orders, although the pickup location might change.
Seewald plans to host going-away events at the North Anthony location, as well as make an announcement on the store's grand opening.
Craft beer week
Local breweries are tapping into the celebration that is American Craft Beer Week.
The salute to craft brewers, which is in its 14th year, helps raise awareness of the local beer industry.
Northeast Indiana has become home to many local breweries that are driving economic development. These breweries have a long history of partnership and the Northern Indiana Beer Trail is just one of these efforts.
This year's event is this week, with celebrations already under way.
On Thursday, there will be a Northern Indiana Beer Trail Tap Takeover at Dash-In, 814 S. Calhoun St., and Rudy's Shop, 409 W. Brackenridge St.
From there, the takeover will move to JK O'Donnell's Irish Ale House, 121 W. Wayne St., on Friday.
Future upcoming events supporting local craft beer include The Pop Up, a collaboration between local artists and breweries, from 7 to 10 p.m. May 25 at Hop River Brewing, and the Wawabrewski Beer Festival on June 29 at Man Cave Brewing in Syracuse.
Summer is almost here and so are some of the area's popular outdoor dining events.
Blue Jeans Burgers and Beer is from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays at Joseph Decuis in downtown Roanoke. The outdoor courtyard barbecue includes special cocktails, craft draft beer, wine slushies and burgers.
The menu for this week includes the Hungry Farmer Burger, Coconut Curry Mangalitsa Belly Sandwich and Creole Shaved Wagyu Steak. Small plates, salads, gumbo and french fries are also available.

The popular “Birdies, Brews and BBQ” events at Trine University's Club Z will return beginning May 31.
Throughout the summer, the expanded Zollner Golf Course clubhouse, in the Angola university's MTI Center, will feature live music on the patio from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays, along with a menu including choice of ribs, chicken or a hamburger with unlimited sides for $9.95, and a full bar.
Outdoor games and prizes also will be available at this family-friendly event.
Club Z features a lunch and dinner menu provided by Bon Appetit, along with its full bar, which stocks wine from Satek Winery and beer from Mad Anthony Brewing Co. along with many other popular selections.

• Food trucks will return this week to the Sharing Peace Cafe, 4900 Fairfield Ave. There will be a variety of trucks parked at the cafe, attached to Peace Lutheran Church, from 5 to 8 p.m. the first and third Thursdays of the month. There will be indoor and outdoor seating, outdoor games and live music. The cafe will also be open to serve coffee beverages.
• In honor of National Hamburger Month, BurgerFi has launched a new twist on a classic street food. The Street Stack features Griddle Corn Cakes (arepas), an all-natural Angus beef patty, melted white cheddar and mozzarella cheeses and smoky bacon and charred jalapeno pico de gallo. And $1 from each sandwich will go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to help end childhood cancer.
