Some local restaurants got us good on Monday.
Taking part in some April Fools' Day fun, they shared “news” about everything from starting a new venture to shutting down.
A post or two was so well-written that it even had me fooled.
Just in case you didn't get the joke:
• Fort Wayne's Famous Coney Island advertised a live event during which it would reveal the secret to its sauce. But the recipe is still under the proverbial lock and key. You'll have to go downtown to get a taste of the sauce, whether you prefer it on its own as a bowl or on a dog.
• Bandidos Mexican Restaurant will keep its stuffed peppers on the menu. The local Mexican chain shared that it would be saying goodbye to the popular dish, but the team was just kidding.
• 2Toms Brewery is sticking to beer. Tom Carpenter, owner of one of the newer breweries in the city, shared that he had purchased a turn-key winery and would begin bringing vintages to the city in 2020. But rest easy, his creative juices will be focused on brews not vino. And definitely no milkshake merlot!
• Kim Vu is not closing for business. The restaurant will keep serving Vietnamese favorites, such as pho and noodle bowls.
• On a national level, Starbucks wanted to introduce you to Pupbucks, a store for dogs. But considering that there are cat cafés, is a dog coffee shop all that crazy?
Zinnia's Bakehouse is settling into its new digs downtown and is ready to host one of its most popular events.
The bakery owned by Krystal Vega and her family will host its First Saturday Beignets at the shop at 236 E. Wayne St.
Vega says she has been taking orders for a month, and some are standing orders.
Beignets are a New Orleans pastry, consisting of fried dough dusted generously with powdered sugar.
They will be available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Vega, who supplies bread to several local restaurants, is also hoping to expand the Zinnia's menu.
On April 13, Zinnia's will have a Sour Day with a variety of sour breads available for sample and sale.
The former Pokagon Falls Miniature Golf in Angola has a new name and management.
The Backyard will continue to offer two courses of miniature golf along with ice cream and snacks. The new team plans on renovating the interior to offer more space to relax, enjoy treats and play board games.
The Backyard's grand opening will be May 17.
• Work at the former Flanagan's is underway, according to Gary Chappell. Demolition on the inside of the building has been completed, but the restaurant operations team is awaiting architectural drawings so the project can proceed. Chappell, who is working with Bill Bean on several local restaurants, also shared that Bill's Smokehouse and Duesy's Sports Bar are under new management.
• It looks like a yellow house but the HVAC system coming from the roof tells a different story. The building at 412 E. Pontiac St. appears to be in the middle of a renovation, with plans for a restaurant. According to permits from the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health, there are plans for an establishment called Los Carnales.
• Granite City Food & Brewery is having Breakfast with the Easter Bunny from 9 a.m. to noon on April 13. Cost is $11.99 for adults and $5.99 for kids. The restaurant is taking reservations; call 471-3030.
