For closing night this weekend, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic is adding a unique element to its performance: live painting.
The music program for Saturday's performance includes “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Modest Mussorgsky, who was inspired after a visit to an art show. Mussorgsky composed “Pictures” as a stroll though the exhibit with each movement representing one of the pieces of art on display.
The Philharmonic will reverse the process this weekend as it invites local artist Theopolis Smith onstage to paint something inspired during the performance. He will have about 30 minutes to complete the piece, which will be auctioned off June 1 at the Philharmonious event benefiting the orchestra's education and community engagement programs.
