Purdue picks up basketball recruit
The Purdue men's basketball team added a recruit to its 2019 class Sunday when four-star forward Mason Gillis announced he will play for the Boilermakers after finishing his high school career at New Castle.
Gillis is a 6-foot-6, 215-pound forward that 247sports rates the No. 7 player in Indiana and the No. 122 recruit nationally. He chose Purdue over offers from several other Big Ten teams, including Indiana and Ohio State.
Matt Painter had visited New Castle to speak with Gillis' family in February and the forward made an unofficial visit to Purdue in May. He returned to West Lafayette to play with New Castle at Purdue's team camp before deciding to become the second member of the Boilermakers' 2019 recruiting class.
The senior forward joins three-star Zionsville guard Isaiah Thompson, brother of former Purdue point guard P.J. Thompson, in the Boilers' 2019 class. The class currently ranks No. 10 nationally, per 247sports.com.
As a junior at New Castle, Gillis averaged 21.6 points and 12.2 rebounds, while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field for a team that won a Class 3A regional championship.
