Botts leaving IPFW for Ball State
Ben Botts is going home.
An IPFW men's basketball assistant coach for four seasons, Botts is joining Ball State as an assistant coach
“It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Botts told the Muncie Star Press.
A 2007 Muncie Central graduate, Botts played for the Mastodons from 2007-11. His first day with the Cardinals is today.
At Muncie Central, Botts was a member of the Bearcats’ 2005 and 2006 teams that finished runner-up in Class 4A.
Botts, who is filling the job vacated by Danny Peters last month, was a graduate assistant for two seasons at Xavier for Chris Mack.
“It’s certainly a bonus that he’s from here,” Ball State head coach James Whitford told the Star Press. “I think it impacted how much he wanted the job because it’s a chance for him to return home.
IPFW won 78 games the last four seasons, including to victories over Indiana.
“It’s tough to say goodbye to those guys (at Fort Wayne),” Botts told the Star Press. “It’s exciting at the same time to get the opportunity to come to Ball State with what coach Whitford and that staff has done over the last few years and what they have coming back. I think Ball State has an incredible team coming back and is loaded at most positions. So it’s exciting, yet bittersweet at the same time.”
