IPFW volleyball tops Quincy

Behind a blistering hitting night, No. 15 IPFW topped Quincy 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) on Friday at Arnie Ball Court. The Mastodons hit .395 (41-11-76) for the match.

Quincy took an early 10-7 lead. IPFW took three straight to even the score, but the Hawks then went on a 4-2 run. The Mastodons earned three of the last four points of the set on three kills from three different players. The .333 hitting clip in the opening set was the lowest of the match.

IPFW started its dominant second set with a 12-6 lead, but the Hawks earned four straight. IPFW had a 10-4 run to lead by seven, but the Hawks stole two on set point opportunities. Michael Keegan had four kills on four attacks in the second frame to lead all IPFW attackers. The Mastodons hit .435 while holding Quincy to .172.

Tomas Gago had his best set of the night in the final frame (6-0-7), to end his night 9-0-10 for a .900 clip. He also had three of his six blocks in the last set. The Mastodons took five straight points to push the lead to 18-13, forcing a Quincy timeout. The Hawks did not get within four points for the rest of the night. IPFW hit .423 in the last set.

Keegan finished with four kills and 33 assists. Pelegrin Vargas and Tony Price both hit over .400. Price also had five blocks. Price, Vargas, Colton Stone and Kolbie Knorr divided the defensive efforts, all finishing with four digs. The Mastodons  finished with nine team blocks, compared to the Hawks' four.

IPFW picked up its first three-set win in the MIVA, moving to 16-9, 4-7, while Quincy remains winless in conference with a 12-15, 0-11 record. The Mastodons play host to Lindenwood to Arnie Ball Court on Saturday, looking to win their second match against the Lions this season.
