IPFW men's basketball program picks up 2 recruits
IPFW men's basketball announced the commitment of Matt Weir and Marcus DeBerry to the program Wednesday.
"I am extremely excited to have both Matt and Marcus join our program," coach Jon Coffman said in a release. "Both are tremendous fits to our unselfish culture, have come from winning traditions in high school, have been well coached and are committed to putting in the time and effort to become great players."
Weir, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard, comes to Fort Wayne from the Air Force Academy Prep Academy. He averaged 18 points and 6 assists per game. He graduated from John Glenn High School in New Concord, Ohio.
"Matt has an incredibly mature basketball IQ, can shoot and pass the ball at a high level and is motivated to put in the daily work to be the best that he can possibly be," Coffman said. "Matt brings great experience to our program having won a state championship in high school as well as playing at the Air Force Academy in their prep school program."
DeBerry, a 6-5, 165 guard, played the last two seasons at Northern Arizona. He will redshirt next season for the Mastodons and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining starting in 2018-19. He averaged 10.3 points, 4 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season.
"Marcus has had great success at the Division I level as a two-year starter," Coffman said. "He is a versatile player that combines great perimeter skills with his size and length. He loved our track record for developing players during their transfer redshirt year, and I believe his ability to shoot and pass at a high level will fit into our style of play."
