Huntington wins CL baseball title

Huntington routed Marian 15-3 in the Crossroads League baseball tournament championship at Taylor's Winterholter Field in Upland on Wednesday.

It's the Foresters' seventh tournament title, but the first time the program has earned regular-season and conference championship titles in the same season.

Huntington (33-11) gave up a run in the top of the first inning but scored the next nine runs to go up 9-1 after a six-run fourth inning, including a grand slam by Mike Crowley, his seventh homer of the season.

Tyler Zimske also hit a home run, bringing in two. Dalton Combs hit a two-run triple and scored three times, and Shea Beauchamp finished 1 for 3 with three RBI.

Tarrin Beachy (4-1) threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, giving up one run and striking out four.

The Foresters' average margin of victory in the four-day league tournament was just under 11 runs as they outscored opponents 53-10 including a 21-1 semifinal win over Goshen on Tuesday.

Huntington earned an automatic bid for the NAIA national tournament because of the regular season championship and will find out today its opponent for the opening round May 15-17.

Marian earned the league's second automatic qualifying bids as the tournament runner-up.
