Mad Ants unveil youthful roster for camp

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

The Mad Ants’ roster has a nucleus of returning players who have had success at Memorial Coliseum: Stephan Hicks, Tra-Deon Hollins, Je’lon Hornbeak and Edmond Sumner, who won’t be at the opening of training camp Monday because he’s still with the NBA’s Indiana Pacers.

And the Mad Ants’ roster has players aside from Sumner who are coming off training camp with the Pacers: veteran Omari Johnson; Elijah Stewart, a rookie out of USC; and Demetrius Denzel-Dyson, a rookie from Samford.

Add to the mix a lot more youth, like rookies Rob Gray from Houston and Deion McClenton from NAIA's Keiser University, and Fort Wayne believes it has an exciting roster heading into its first practice at the ASH Centre.

“We do a lot of work and spend a lot of time and energy on these players, whether they are players from tryouts or on two-way (NBA contracts),” Mad Ants general manager Brian Levy said. “To finally get a chance to get your eyes on them at practice, it’s an exciting time for the front office and the coaches. I can’t wait to get things going.”

This will be the fourth season in which the Pacers have owned and operated the Mad Ants. They are coming off a season in which they won a division championship – they were 29-21 in the regular season – and lost to the Erie BayHawks in the single-elimination conference semifinals.

Coach Steve Gansey will be back for a fourth consecutive season.

Note that this is a particularly young roster, so the onus is really going to be on Johnson and Hicks to take over the leadership of this team right away.

Here is the full training camp roster with the players’ heights:

Demetrius Denzel-Dyson 6-5

Rob Gray 6-1

Wade Guerin 6-9
