Komets' Szydlowski: 'My favorite team'
JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette
LOVELAND, Colorado -- Just to give you an idea of just how close this Komets team was, and just how disappointed it is that the season has ended, here are some other quotes from the guys before they got on the bus back to Fort Wayne.
Shawn Szydlowski: "This is my favorite team I’ve ever played on, that’s what I’ll say. I can guarantee this will be the hardest time in my career I’ve had to take off a jersey. That was the one time I just did not want to take it off. That was the type of team this was. I’d play with them year-round. I’d give up my summer to keep playing with these guys. That’s how much fun we had and how much better we deserved. Yeah, I’d say it was a successful season. Obviously we were one goal short."
Gabriel Desjardins: "It was a great bunch of a dudes. It was a family. Everyone was so strong together. We proved it all season. We had bad injuries, guys called up, but we always found ways to win the games. In the playoffs, we battled through a lot of injuries and ended up going to the Western Conference finals. We gave it all we got and just came up a little short."
Coach Gary Graham: "The whole season long, it was a next-man up mentality the whole year. It was unbelievable to watch the different pieces. The parts got moved around and guys were interchangeable. You’re talking about having to beat some really good teams to get to the finals. But you’ve got to tip your hat because Colorado, they found a way."
The annual end-of-season party and jersey auction will be Friday at the Appleseed Room at Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30. Admission is $5. Season-ticket holders and kids under 12 get in free.
