Journal Gazette

The TinCaps lost their second straight series after falling 7-1 Wednesday against Quad Cities in the rubber match of a three-game set at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa.

The River Bandits (18-13) won the final two games of the series by a combined score of 16-1 and held the TinCaps (14-19) scoreless for 17 consecutive innings before Fort Wayne second baseman Esteury Ruiz hit his fifth home run of the season in the ninth inning of Wednesday's matchup.

Leadoff hitter Jacob Meyers propelled Quad Cities to the victory with a huge day at the plate. The center fielder went 2 for 5, doubled, scored twice and hit his third home run of the season in the third inning to open the scoring. Marcos Almonte went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI, running his total in the series to five.

The River Bandits scored single runs in the third and fourth off TinCaps starter Emmanuel Ramirez, who took his second straight tough-luck loss after a solid outing. Ramirez gave up two runs on five hits in five innings, striking out nine. He's fanned 26 hitters in 16 1/3 innings with Fort Wayne this season.

Quad Cities broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning against TinCaps reliever Adrian Martinez. All four runs against Martinez were earned as he gave up four hits in the inning. The right hander recovered to pitch a perfect seventh before former IPFW right-hander Evan Miller worked the eighth.

Fort Wayne managed just four hits, including only one against starting pitcher Yohan Ramirez. Ramirez (3-2) pitched seven shutout innings and struck out four.

The TinCaps had better luck against reliever Carlos Sanabria. In addition to Ruiz's home run in the ninth, catcher Juan Fernandez laced an eighth-inning double, running his on-base streak to 20 games.
