Avila sets strikeout mark as TinCaps win in 10
Fort Wayne pitcher Pedro Avila set a franchise record with 17 strikeouts as the TinCaps outlasted the Great Lakes Loons 4-1 in 10 innings Tuesday in Midland, Michigan, for their fifth straight victory.
Avila broke the former record of 15 held by LaTroy Hawkins with the Wizards in 1993. Avila, who got a no-decision, gave up three hits and one earned run in eight innings. Avila threw 107 pitches, 74 for strikes.
Avila's performance comes just over a week after Michel Baez set a Parkview Field record with 14 strikeouts in a 4-3 win against Dayton on July 31. Just like Baez, Avila didn't walk a batter.
The TinCaps (30-15 second half, 55-59) scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to break a 1-1 tie with the Loons (20-25, 56-58).
Marcus Greene Jr. and Fernando Tatis had an RBI for Fort Wayne. Tatis also walked four times.
IPFW product Evan Miller (1-1) got the win with two innings of relief of Avila. Evy Ruibal (1-1) took the loss.
Note: Pitcher Jim McDade was brought back to Fort Wayne from short-season Tri-City, while pitcher Mark Zimmerman went from Fort Wayne to Tri-City.
