Game 34: TinCaps (12-21) vs. Beloit (15-16)

CHRIS GOFF | The Journal Gazette

For the second straight start, Austin Smith wasn't right. He gave up a six-spot in the second inning Friday night at Cedar Rapids, a game the TinCaps lost 12-4.

Smith's next chance comes tonight against Beloit in the opener of a three-game series at Parkview Field. He's had five days to work on things.

The TinCaps hope the pitcher they saw April 22 at Great Lakes will re-emerge. When manager Anthony Contreras walked to the mound to lift Smith that night, he had held the Loons scoreless, giving up only three hits with seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings.

Contrast that with his last home start, April 29 against South Bend, when Smith didn't make it out of the fourth after issuing six walks.

"He started losing command and started searching for it instead of letting his natural ability take over," Contreras said. "One thing went wrong, and we had an error, and he just couldn't rebound from that stuff."

Perhaps tonight will trigger a reclamation for the 20-year-old right-hander.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early as gates open at 6:05 p.m. when former major league All-Star Trevor Hoffman will sign autographs on the concourse until 6:55 p.m.
