Notebook: Reed sidelined by back injury
CHRIS GOFF | The Journal Gazette
Buddy Reed was supposed to be the TinCaps' everyday center fielder, but a troublesome back is derailing those plans.
Reed has been out the last three games. Following Wednesday's 3-2 win over West Michigan at Parkview Field, Fort Wayne manager Anthony Contreras revealed the former University of Florida standout is dealing with a back issue and might go on the disabled list.
"He's getting it checked out, so we're not sure if he will go on the DL or not," Contreras said. "He was actually at the doctor today during the game. We'll have a better idea about it probably either tonight or tomorrow."
Reed first hurt his back during spring training. After going 1 for 5 in Saturday's win at Bowling Green, Reed felt the pain again on the trip back to Fort Wayne.
"He's been playing with it," Contreras said. "I think now it's just better to get it checked out early and make sure it's nothing really crazy. If we have to make a move, we'll make a move to get him rest and get him ready to play the rest of the season. It could have been the long bus ride. It just felt tight, and he wanted to get it checked out. We thought it was necessary to get it checked out."
Hit it if you can: Jesse Scholtens threw seven innings Wednesday and held the Whitecaps to two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. "The key was throwing strikes," Scholtens said. "They were an aggressive team, so I just let them hit it.
Sellout: The paid attendance for Wednesday's matinee affair was announced as 7,071, the stadium's third sellout of the year.
Up next: Left-hander Logan Allen is scheduled to pitch Thursday at Great Lakes against the Loons' Devin Smeltzer, also a southpaw.
