Stevie was still fuming as she headed into work.
Margie just about fainted when she found out that Stevie had gone to the riverbank.
"And you actually found something," she yelled at Stevie. "This is just like 'Murder She Wrote.' Only you're way cuter than the woman who played Jessica Fletcher. What was her name? Charlotte Rae. That's it."
"That's Mrs. Garrett," Stevie said, fumbling through her purse for some change.
"Huh?" Margie cocked her head.
"Mrs. Garrett off the TV show 'The Facts of Life.' Angela Lansbury played Jessica Fletcher."
Margie put her hands on her hips and looked up at the ceiling. "Oh, right. Well, you're cuter than her too."
"Thanks," Stevie said. "I need some caffeine."
On her way to the vending machine, co-workers kept stopping Stevie wanting details of the day's events. Craig wasn't very happy when he found out Stevie had become part of the investigation.
She thought for sure he was going to pull her off the story. She was now charged with writing a first-person story, explaining to readers how she found the purse.
It wasn't the only story she would be writing. She found out that Craig wanted the story about the murdered women to run that weekend. It was definitely going to be a busy night.
That's where the caffeine came in. She had a feeling she was going to need it. Or, it could be that she just needed to take a walk to collect her thoughts.
One thing she knew she had to do was call Celeste's mother and tell her about finding the purse. She would want to know. She wasn't sure how she would explain finding it. Would she think I'm involved? Stevie figured she was involved somehow.
She wasn't really sure what was happening. It seemed strange. Stevie felt connected to the killings even though she was only reporting them. Well, until today.
Things weren't adding up. Why did cat lady feel like she needed to warn me and tell me about the riverbank? Surely finding the purse was a coincidence. Is there someone lurking around the apartment?
Then there was Jason. Why wasn't he taking any pictures today? How much did he know that he wasn't telling?
Right now, no one was saying much of anything. Stevie had put in a call to a police friend to see what was going on with the case. Hopefully her friend knew somebody who could tell Stevie what was happening and shed a little light on Jason Mullen.
For right now, she decided to push him from her mind and focus on her work.
Stevie had so much to do that it wasn't until after deadline that she finally took her dinner break. She stood up to stretch and decided she needed to get out for a while. She grabbed her purse and headed to the parking lot.
The last bits of light streaked the sky. The air was warm and a breeze was ruffling the trees. Stevie noticed that all the leaves were blowing backward, showing their underside. Her grandpa had once told her that meant it was going to rain. She wasn't sure if it could be proven but it did feel like rain was on its way.
Stevie looked around. The evening felt off. Almost like something was going to happen. No one appeared to be outside, but yet Stevie felt watched.
She hurried to her car. As she got closer she noticed something on her windshield. She sighed. It appeared someone had put a flier under her wiper. But when she went to grab it, she realized it was an envelope.
The sight of it gave her a chill. She looked around again. No one.
She slowly opened it and pulled out a piece of paper. It was a note. From Jason.
I'm sorry. Please forgive me for being so angry. I was worried about you. It's not my plan to hurt you. Come by when you get off work tonight. I'll be up.
Stevie couldn't help but smile, although she wanted to be angry. She debated whether she should go see him while she drove around looking for something to eat.
It wasn't until she returned to work that she had made up her mind. She's a brick house/ She's mighty, mighty ... Stevie dug for her cell phone and then looked at the number. She didn't recognize it.
She smiled. It must be Jason. He's calling to see if I got his note. "Hello?"
"What have you done, Stevie?" The voice on the other end was almost a whisper. The caller talked slowly, almost intentionally stretching his words. Stevie could tell it was a guy, but she didn't know who.
"Who is this?" she said.
"Shut up," the voice on the other end screamed. "You've ruined everything."
Stevie began to tremble as she realized who she was talking to. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You've messed up my work. You should've just left things alone. Now, because of you, someone else must die."
Stevie heard a click and then the phone went silent.
She stood for a moment looking at her phone. Tears began to stream down her face and she felt dizzy.
She began punching numbers on her phone. "Craig? I think I just talked to the killer. I'm not sure, but I think there's going to be another murder."
