Lutheran halting heart-transplant program

Lutheran Hospital is halting its heart transplant program, spokesman Geoff Thomas announced today.
The hospital's only cardiologist specially trained is moving out of state next month, he said.
"Lutheran Hospital had recruited a replacement for her role but those plans fell through, leaving the program without an advanced heart failure cardiologist to care for and monitor patients," Thomas said.
Lutheran officials will assist patients on the local waiting list for new hearts in transitioning to another program, he said.
The first heart transplant at Lutheran Hospital was performed in 1985.
