Homestead girls pull away from South Side to win SAC Holiday tourney

VICTORIA JACOBSEN | The Journal Gazette

This time on Friday night, the Homestead girls were suffering their worse loss of the season in the Hall of Fame Classic final.

But on Saturday, the Spartans (16-2) held off South Side with a 43-30 victory to win their third SAC Holiday Tournament title.

The final was Homestead's fifth game in three days.

South Side kept the game interesting well into the fourth quarter, threatening a repeat of their comeback against Concordia in the afternoon semifinal, but couldn't hit late shots that would've narrowed the gap.

South Side dictated the tempo during the first half, eating up the clock on offense and grinding down the Spartans on defense, and trailed by a manageable score of 16-12 at halftime. But the Homestead offense revved up in the third quarter as the team combined for four 3-pointers and pulled out to a 13-point lead.

Freshman Ayanna Patterson led the Spartans with 20 points and 14 rebounds and generated offense even when none of her teammates could get shots to fall. Sylare Starks scored nine.

South Side's Jaci Jones led the Archers with 12 points, and both Alaya Chapman and Lamyia Woodson scored six.
