New Haven man charged with vehicular homicide

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

A New Haven man was charged Monday with killing a woman in a fiery car accident last month on Cuba Road.

Juliet Ann Taylor Schebelt, 27, died from blunt force injuries in the wreck, the Allen County coroner's office said.

Jeremy J. Hoerger, 29, is charged with reckless homicide and driving while intoxicated causing death.

Police were called to the 11000 block of Cuba Road around 10 p.m. June 29. A two-door 1996 Chevy Blazer went off the west side of the road when it failed to negotiate a curve, struck a road sign and then struck a tree on the passenger side and caught fire, according to court documents.

"The impact with the tree was so intense that the tree crushed the Chevrolet's passenger side to the middle of the Chevrolet through the passenger seat where Juliet Schnebetl was seat belted in," a probable cause affidavit states.

Witnesses pulled the unconscious Hoerger from the wreck, but Schnebelt could not be removed, the affidavit says.

Tests revealed Hoerger had a blood alcohol content of .27 – more than three times the legal limit – at the time of the accident, according to court documents.
