ECHL drops hammer for fracas

LOVELAND, Colorado — The ECHL has come down hard on the Komets and Colorado Eagles for the fracas before Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.
Fort Wayne’s Dennis Kravchenko and Colorado’s Gabriel Verpaelst were suspended five games, though they served one apiece already. Fort Wayne’s Daniel Maggio and Colorado’s Joey Ratelle got three games.
They were also fined undisclosed amounts, as were coaches Gary Graham of Fort Wayne and Aaron Schneekloth.
Both teams were also fined.
What do I think? Way too severe. While I understand they need to send a message that you can’t have stuff before games, this amounted to two fights. As someone with another team just texted to me: “Who does this benefit?”
Well, I can actually answer that: Colorado, since Maggio has arguably been the Komets’ best player lately.
