Defendant gets at least 120-year term in sex-abuse case

Matthew LeBlanc | The Journal Gazette

An Allen County judge on Friday ordered a Fort Wayne man to spend at least 120 years behind bars for sexually abusing a girl for more than a decade.

A jury in April convicted Lawrence M. Davis, 47, also known as Lance Davis, of 16 felony charges and one misdemeanor related to the abuse.

Allen Superior Judge John Surbeck sentenced Davis to 40 years on each of three child molesting charges. The sentences will be served back-to-back.

Surbeck said he needs more time to consider sentences for the other 14 charges and scheduled a hearing next week for that.

According to court documents, Davis began abusing the girl when she was 5 and continued for the next 13 years. He engaged in sex acts with her, gave her cigarettes, drugs and alcohol and showed her pornography that included children and animals, the documents said.

Several members of Davis' family wrote letters to Surbeck and spoke at a sentencing hearing Friday, saying the man convicted is not the manipulative person portrayed in court documents and at trial.

The victim also spoke, saying she was damaged physically and psychologically by the abuse. She called him a monster.
