Illinois would be the 37th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, not the 36th, as an April 14 Furthermore asserted. The measure passed the Illinois Senate last month and a four-hour hearing took place in the House Monday. In 1977, Indiana became the 35th state to approve the amendment – the last state to do so before a 1982 deadline imposed by Congress. In recent years, supporters have been trying to revive the drive for the amendment in hopes that Congress would be willing to waive the deadline. Nevada became the 36th state to approve the amendment last year.
