Manchester University said today it will be offering the country's first dual degree in both Doctor of Pharmacy and Master of Pharmacogenomics.

In a statement, Manchester said pharmacogenomics is a new field of science, typically known as precision medicine, involving the patient's genes and response to medication.

This allows a drug prescription that is tailored to a specific person's needs and to maximize therapy at the same time, decreasing adverse effects, the statement said.

Students will be able to complete both degrees concurrently within four years, said W. Thomas Smith, professor and dean of pharmacy programs at Manchester.

The program is to begin this summer, and current first-year pharmacy students are eligible to apply, the university said. It said applications are being accepted now.
