ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna to step down

Justin A. Cohn | The Journal Gazette

Brian McKenna, who is in his 16th season as ECHL commissioner, announced today he will step down after this season. A national search for a replacement is underway.

McKenna has done a great job, especially over the last few years, as the landscape of minor-league hockey has changed to make more geographic sense. Jacksonville is already one of the stronger teams financially, for instance, and the northeast shift of teams has strengthened the league.

Whomever gets this job really needs to solve hockey-related issues that are hurting the product. Things like batch American Hockey League callups, lack of instant replay and the way some teams circumvent the salary cap through affiliations might be solved by someone who is focused on the hockey front as much as the business front.

Remember, the Komets play host to Wichita at 7:30 p.m.
