2-year-old's death declared homicide

The Journal Gazette

A 2-year-old boy taken to a Fort Wayne fire station Wednesday died from blunt force injury of the abdomen, and his death was declared Allen County's 36th homicide of the year, the county coroner's office said today.

The blunt force injury led to Malakai Michael Garrett dying from hemoperitoneum because of laceration of the pancreas, duodenum and mesentery, the coroner's office said in a statement following an autopsy.

The death remains under investigation by Fort Wayne police, the coroner's office and the county prosecutor's office.

The injuries were "consistent with that of multiple blows and strikes from a closed fist punch," according to court documents filed Friday.

A doctor told investigators the boy also had severe injuries to internal organs including the stomach, liver and small intestine as well as a lacerated pancreas.

Mitchell Vanryn, 27, of Fort Wayne, is charged with aggravated battery and domestic battery. He was looking after the child Wednesday, and he was arrested Thursday.
