Group encourages pursuing a career in manufacturing

SHERRY SLATER | The Journal Gazette

Although manufacturing generates almost 30 percent of Indiana's economic activity and provides more than 500,000 jobs in the state, many parents are reluctant to encourage their teens to pursue those careers, industry officials say.

Brian Burton said manufacturers have to do more to change that perception of the industry that increasingly operates high-tech equipment in clean environments.

The president and CEO of the Indiana Manufacturers Association visited Fort Wayne today to share preliminary results from the trade group's annual survey of manufacturing employers. IMA staff also discussed the 2017 legislative session and previewed issued expected to be tackled in 2018.

Burton is making seven regional presentations ahead of the organization's annual meeting in Indianapolis next month. His goal is to inform employers about changes in state law and new programs that have been created. He also wants to gather feedback about employers' needs.

"Wherever we go, it's about workforce," he said.
