5 to watch

South Adams’ Sydney Willis is one of the top individuals to watch.

– It was another down year for northeast Indiana in 2013, with no teams advancing to the state finals for a second straight season.

Three individuals did represent the area at state in Blackhawk Christian’s Jaycee Bunner, South Adams’ Sydney Willis and the graduated Nikki LaLonde from Warsaw.

With a new state venue, there is a solid group of teams and players who will be looking to make the trip south to compete at the state level.

Here is a look at some of the top 2014 players, teams and possible stories.

Individuals

Jaycee Bunner, Blackhawk Christian: The senior tied for 22nd at the state finals with a two-day total of 156.

Sydney Willis, South Adams: The junior was 49th at the state finals with an 83 and 84 in the two rounds.

Katie Giant, Bishop Dwenger: The senior led the Saints to SAC and sectional titles.

Alyn Clark, East Noble: The senior was second at the sectional with an 82 and also shot an 86 at the regional.

Sarah Banister, Carroll: The sophomore had a nine-hole average of 39 last year.

Teams

Carroll: The NHC champion Chargers will have Banister and junior Kierstin Murphy battling for the No. 1 position and also bring back sophomore Ali Boyle and seniors Emily McDermit and Kyra Salter.

East Noble: The Knights were sixth at the regional and bring back Clark, junior Cooper Handshoe, seniors Becca Alwine and Mariah Hernandez.

Bishop Dwenger: The Saints have won three straight SAC titles and return seniors Giant and Amanda Miller, along with sophomore Katherine Hill and a talented group of freshmen.

Bellmont: The Braves finished 10th the regional last year and return seniors Macy Phegley and Rylee Hamilton and sophomores Morgan Ellsworth, Maddie Strickler, Lexy Norby and Olivia Hamilton.

Canterbury: The Cavs will bring back senior Sarah Stroup, sophomore Deborah Choe, junior Allison Perry, sophomore Addie Stinson, senior Martha Kiningham and freshman Samantha McAlexander.

Storylines

New state venue: The state finals will be played at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel after 13 years at The Legends in Franklin.

First ACAC tournament: There will be an ACAC tournament for the first time as Bluffton got a new team last year and Adams Central got a team this year and Jay County (the host site of tourney) comes into the league this year.

Switching roles: Warsaw finished fourth at the regional and will have the same coaches but different roles as Ray Davis will be the head coach and Chris LaLonde will be the assistant this year.

City experience: Leo could be among the better teams in the area this year and if they are, it could be because their top five players – junior Anna Feldman, senior Ashley Kimes and sophomores Brooke Moser and Haley Parker – all played in the Fort Wayne women’s golf tournament, a rarity for high school teams.

Wawasee’s lone duo: Senior Elizabeth Jackson and junior Mikala Mawhorter both competed at last year’s regionals as individuals.
