Veteran assistant Bruce Stephens has been elevated as the New Haven boys basketball coach, the school announced Thursday.

Stephens replaces Al Gooden, who left recently to become the new coach at Lawrence Central.

Stephens worked with Gooden since 1996 at Harding and then New Haven. He was on the staff when Harding won the Class 2A state championship in 2011 and was state runner-up in 2002, 2006 and 2008.
