Trucker's term suspended in crash that killed 4-year-old

A trucker who caused a crash that left a 4-year-old girl dead received a suspended prison sentence Friday in Allen Superior Court.

Gary Golay was driving longer than he should have been while he was hauling car parts on U.S. 30 nearly two years ago.

And as the 57-year-old approached the red light at Kroemer Road, he didn’t brake, slamming his semi into four other vehicles at 60 mph.

The wreck left 4-year-old Abigail Little dead and resulted in Golay pleading guilty to felony counts of reckless homicide and criminal recklessness, as well as a misdemeanor count of false reporting because of falsifying records in his log books.

As part of a plea agreement, Golay received no prison time but was given a seven-year suspended sentence by an Allen Superior Court judge.

Golay sobbed during today’s hearing, especially when a letter from Little’s parents was read, describing the pain they go through each day without her.

“I wish I was the one that died that day,” Golay said. “I can’t ask anyone for forgiveness because I can’t forgive myself.”
