Lawmakers sport local jerseys

Weather permitting, federal lawmakers wearing the uniforms of IPFW and Trine University are scheduled to take the field at tonight’s Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game for Charity in Washington, D.C.

Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., an outfielder for the Democrats, will don an IPFW Mastodons jersey for part of the annual contest at Nationals Park, his staff said. He also will wear a Ball State University jersey.

“He tries to represent two schools every year,” Sarah Rothschild, press secretary for the University of Notre Dame graduate, said in an email.

Rothschild said this is Donnelly’s eighth straight game since 2007, when he was a member of the House from the South Bend-based 2nd District. His Democratic Party team has won the last five games.

Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd, will wear a Trine Thunder uniform. Stutzman, who attended the Angola school, is expected to be the starting pitcher for the Republicans, according to Chief of Staff John Hammond IV.

Hammond cautioned that rain is forecast for Washington tonight and could postpone the game.

Stutzman in the past has worn a Fort Wayne TinCaps jersey and cap. He is the lone Indiana lawmaker on this year’s 31-member GOP roster, and Donnelly is the only Hoosier on the 23-member Democratic squad.

Republicans boast the player with the highest political profile: Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who is considering a run for president in 2016. Democrats have the only female player – California Rep. Linda Sanchez – as well as the best player: Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, a former outfielder for Morehouse College in Atlanta who has dominated recent congressional games as a pitcher and a hitter.

The GOP has a razor-thin edge in the series with 38 victories, 37 losses and one tie, according to

The game, which is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m., raises funds for the Washington Literacy Center, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation.
