Prohibition inspires upcoming restaurant

Here’s a little history lesson: While alcohol sales were outlawed during Prohibition, not all production was shut down in the United States.

At Beaulieu Vineyard, a Napa Valley winery, grapes still grew and wine was still made as it supplied Catholic churches for Holy Communion.

Of course, the winery didn’t make only Communion wine during Prohibition – but that was its cover, says Brian Shreffler, chef/owner of the soon-to-open Hideout 125.

“We want to tell those kinds of stories,” he says.

The wine, sold under the BV label, will be available to diners at the 10350 Coldwater Road restaurant that pays homage to the Prohibition era.

The interior features dark wood and brick walls. The bar is made of copper, as are the fixtures and finishing touches. Chairs are covered in leather and feature high backs.

As for the food, there will be a mix of small and large plates. Shreffler, who was executive chef at Chop’s and Chop’s Wine Bar, says the small-plate menu is extensive. The entrées will run the gamut from steak, lamb and pork chops to fish, chicken and pasta.

The restaurant will feature wines and liquors that were around during Prohibition, as well as craft cocktails. He says some will be aged on site in small bourbon barrels.

“We’re going back to the basics of what the cocktail was supposed to be,” he says, adding that enthusiasts want to be able to trace the ingredients of a drink.

Hideout 125 is hiring staff and plans to open July 7.

More than beer on tap

The name of the event is Oktobeerfest, so there will be some cold brews.

But the Mad Anthony Brewing Co. event, which is in its 16th year, is not just about ales and IPAs, lagers and stouts. The weekend in September will also feature a golf outing, the Gears & Beers Pub Pedal and barbecue.

Tickets go on sale today.

Last year, breweries included Barley Island Brewing Co., Bulldog Brewing, Lafayette Brewing Co., Evil Czech Brewery, Figure Eight Brewing, Flat 12 Bierwerks and Half Moon Brewery.

Cost for this year’s event on Sept. 13 is $30 in advance or $35 at the gate; the price includes unlimited Indiana craft beer samplings from 2 to 6 p.m.

The golf will be at noon Sept. 12 at Bridgewater East in Auburn and the cost is $300 a team; buy tickets at Mad Anthony Brewing Co. or Shigs in Pit locations. The Pub Pedal bike tour will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 13, featuring stops at downtown bars and ending at Headwaters Park West for the festival. Tickets cost $45, which includes entrance to Oktobeerfest.

Coming soon

Central City Café, 620 S. Calhoun St., has set its opening for July 7. The restaurant will be open 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
