Power and control over his own thoughts

Scott Wagner, a Republican state senator in Pennsylvania, has become the latest to fall into the Hitler Comparison Trap.

The Huffington Post reported that during a state Senate debate on legislation to prevent employers from deducting union dues from their employees’ paychecks, Wagner said, “And there are two things that I continue to remember about power and control. There was a gentleman by the name of Hitler, he was about power and control. There is a gentleman by the name of Putin, who is across the ocean, that is about power and control. The union situation is about power and control.”

Later, Wagner told the Associated Press that he wasn’t really comparing the German and Russian dictators to American unions. “I’m talking about the concept of power and control,” he said. “I didn’t say the unions are out killing people.” He added that Moammar Gadhafi and Saddam Hussein were other examples of the power-and-control concept.

Herbert Garver, a business agent for Teamsters Local 776, told the AP he was offended. “Since this country was built by working men and women, how dare any elected official bastardize that right and call it equivalent to Nazism or communism.”
