Notre Dame loses quarterback commit

Notre Dame no longer has a quarterback in its 2015 recruiting class.

On Wednesday, Blake Barnett posted on his Twitter account that he has decommitted from the Irish and is reopening his recruiting. Barnett wrote: “I am officially de-committing from the University of Notre Dame and opening up my recruitment. I want to thank the University and the coaching staff for allowing me the opportunity to attend such a prestigious university.”

Barnett told 247Sports he is no longer considering Notre Dame.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder from Santiago High School in Corona, California, took an unofficial visit to Oregon on Monday and Tuesday, sparking speculation he could waver on his commitment to Notre Dame.

Barnett is rated the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback nationally by 247Sports. He is a four-star prospect.

His decision to decommit from Notre Dame leaves the Irish with eight players in their 2015 recruiting class.

Coach Brian Kelly has said he prefers to have only three scholarship quarterbacks per season, Barnett would have been No. 3 in 2015 only if Everett Golson decided not to return for his final year of eligibility. The Irish's current scholarship quarterbacks are Golson, Malik Zaire and DeShone Kizer.
