Dayton’s second-inning home run secured a lead that the TinCaps could not overcome as the Dragons won 6-4 in the final game of the series at Fifth Third Field on Saturday.
Dustin Peterson opened the scoring for Fort Wayne (14-21) in the top of the second after singles from Dane Phillips and Aldolfo Reina.
Dayton (21-14) responded with a three-run second inning when Avain Rachal walked, stole second and scored, and a home run from Nick Benedetto brought home Carlton Daal.
Benedetto also had two RBI in the sixth inning and scored one run.
In the top of the third, Mallex Smith stole second and scored from a Fernando Perez single.
Smith and Ronnie Richardson scored in the seventh to get the TinCaps within two.
Erik Cabrera (0-2) pitched three innings and allowed seven hits, three runs (all earned) and struck out three. Cabrera is the 11th starter for the TinCaps this season and was making his first start since last year.
Dayton’s Nick Travieso (4-1) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed five hits, two runs and struck out six.
The TinCaps return to Parkview Field with a three-game homestand against Lake County starting Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
