Defendant guilty in Botanical burglary

A jury took about an hour Thursday to convict 47-year-old Darrell Dewayne Carter of burglary causing injury and other charges.

He did not help himself by taking the stand and admitting to the burglary.

Carter was found inside the Botanical Conservatory about 9 p.m. May 3 after a Fort Wayne police detective and a captain responded to an alarm. The detective pointed his gun at Carter, and the two struggled over it. When the captain came to the detective’s assistance, he tore a tendon in a finger on his left hand, according to court documents.

Along with burglary, the jury also convicted Carter of disarming a law enforcement officer and two counts of resisting law enforcement. They also found him to be a habitual offender.

He will be sentenced in late February.
