The Mad Ants fell on hard times in the fourth quarter in a 115-104 road loss to the Maine Red Claws in Portland, Maine, on Saturday.
Fort Wayne (15-10) was outscored by Maine (10-14) 31-16 in the fourth. The Mad Ants led 88-84 after three quarters.
With the loss and Canton’s 98-85 win over Delaware, the Mad Ants fell a game back of the first-place Charge (16-9) in the D-League’s East Division.
Trey McKinney-Jones scored 23 for Fort Wayne, and Ron Howard added 22. Tony Mitchell had 19, and Chris Porter and Ramon Harris added 10 each
The Red Claws were led by a familiar name around Fort Wayne with former IPFW standout Frank Gaines going for a game-high 30 points. Gaines made 17 of 21 from the free-throw line, while shooting 5 of 11 from the field.
Fort Wayne led 68-57 at halftime but Maine started the comeback by winning the third quarter, 27-20.
Shooting was a problem for the Mad Ants as they hit only 32 of 81 shots (40 percent). They were 32 of 37 on free throws (87 percent). Maine countered with 35-of-75 shooting (47 percent) and going 31 of 44 from the line (71 percent).
Vitor Faverani, who was sent down by the Boston Celtics earlier Saturday, had 13 points for the Red Claws.
