Purdue leads Nebraska at half

WEST LAFAYETTE – Purdue leads Nebraska 35-32 at halftime Sunday in Mackey Arena.

But it feels like the Boilermakers should be up by more, if they could have only sustained some momentum.

Purdue went on a 9-4 run after the game was tied at 11 with 13:22 left in the first half to take a 20-15 leads with 8:09 left in the first.

But the Boilermakers gave up a dunk to Leslee Smith after going up by five, then Purdue's Ronnie Johnson had a turnover on the next possession and Penny Parker got to the line to knock down two free throws to cut Nebraska's deficit to 20-19 with 7:05 left in the fist.

Purdue built its lead back up to five with 3-pointers from Jay Simpson and Kendall Stephens late in the half, but the Boilermakers gave points right back after each 3.

Nebraska's Dererell Biggs knocked down a jumper after Simpson's 3, and Ray Gallegos drove right through the defense for a layup after Stephens' 3 to keep the Cornhuskers' deficit at 35-32 with 47 seconds left in the half.

A.J. Hammons, who sat for nearly 10 minutes after drawing a foul 2 minutes into the game, lead Purdue with nine points, and Stephens has eight.

Gallegos has 10 for Nebraska.
