Komets rally to beat IceMen in overtime

It was another trip south that looked to be going south. And then the Komets’ hottest player put a match to that notion.

Brandon Marino, whose eight goals and 18 points in 11 games made him the runner-up to Colorado’s Trent Daavettila for ECHL Player of the Month, tied the game with 1:35 to play in regulation, and then Mike Embach scored a minute into overtime to lift the Komets to a come-from-behind 3-2 road victory over Evansville on Friday.

The victory was the second straight for the Komets (13-11-1-4) and their first in Evansville since Nov. 24.

Goaltender Andrey Makarov kicked out 24 of 26 shots to backstop the win, surrendering goals to former Komet Tristan King at 12:29 of the first and Peter Sakaris at 10:26 of the second.

That gave the IceMen a 2-1 lead that lasted until Marino scored 40 seconds into a power play to force overtime. The IceMen were skating shorthanded after Matt Krug went off for slashing at 17:45.

Embach then ended it almost immediately with his 13th goal of the season.

Chris Auger gave the Komets a short-lived lead at 9:04 of the first. The Komets and IceMen square off again at 7:30 tonight in Memorial Coliseum.
