Burger joint looking to be family haven

Sitting at a window table of the bustling Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern, bar manager Brett Leonards was enthusiastic as he spoke about the 2886 E. Dupont Road restaurant.

The burgers are made from 80/20 beef, and a third of the grind is prime rib meat. The fries are hand-cut, and the sweet potato chips are made in house, allowing them to be labeled gluten-free. The company has its own soda produced, so no Coke or Pepsi, but cola, root beer and, right now, a seasonal green apple cider.

But for me, the mother of a cantankerous 2-year-old, there was one thing that stuck out from our conversation.

“We like to have a fun atmosphere. We’re very family-friendly. We have a train that ... goes around and kids love. We have a kids’ menu with games on it,” he says. “We try to bring families in here and distract the kids so that parents can enjoy the meal.”

Oh, it’s the little things, such as eating with two free hands, that can make a meal.

As far as meals go, Bagger Dave’s, which opened Sunday, offers a variety of burgers, including a build-your-own option; twisted mac ’n’ cheese; salads; and sandwiches. The bar has 10 taps, which feature Indiana craft brews. Beer and soda samplers are available.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday and Monday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

Holiday events

Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park in Angola is hosting breakfast with Santa from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday as part of its regular brunch.

The inn is also open for Christmas dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. The menu includes a salad bar, carved beef, broiled cod and roasted squash. Cost is $24.95 for adults, $21.95 for seniors 65 and older and $10.95 for ages 4 to 10. For reservations, call 1-877-768-2928.

DeBrand Fine Chocolates will have extended open tours for the public at the 10105 Auburn Park Drive shop. Tours are $5 a person, which is then rebated with $5 off a purchase of $10 or more. Tours will be offered 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 26 through Dec. 28 and noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 29.

Ceruti’s Catering is inviting people to ring in the new year at Freakdown 2014. The event will begin at 8 p.m. Dec. 31, and the $20 ticket includes hors d’oeuvres, champagne toast and favors. There will be a cash bar. Go to for tickets.

•Barbecue restaurant Crave, 2461 Hobson Road, has closed after just two months, chef Mike Bentz announced on its Facebook page. Bentz is moving to The Phoenix, 1122 Broadway.

Ben’s Soft Pretzels has opened at Jefferson Pointe, next to Barnes & Noble on the interior side of the mall.
