289 films looking for slots in top Oscar category

There are 289 films in the running for a best picture Oscar this awards season, according to the film academy on Monday.

To be eligible, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences says a film must have opened in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County, Calif., by midnight, Dec. 31, and have a running time of at least 40 minutes.

The best picture category can have up to 10 nominees, according to current academy rules.

The academy also on Monday released a list of 75 songs eligible for the best original song category.
