Son sentenced to 12 years in attack on mother with toilet lid

Jeffery Jenkins

A Fort Wayne man was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison for beating his mother with the lid of a toilet tank.

In August, Jeffery Jenkins, 36, of the 1100 block of Springbrook Road, was charged with aggravated battery after he attacked his mother after she confronted him over his heroin use. Jenkins beat her with the lid of a toilet tank until it shattered, leaving her bleeding on the floor for 30 minutes while he paced around the room, according to court documents.

Eventually, he stole her car and ATM card, withdrawing $300 from her account.

In November, he pleaded guilty to aggravated battery. Additional charges of battery committed by a deadly weapon or causing serious bodily injury, auto theft and theft were dropped in a plea pact.

During his hearing, Jenkins’ sister told a judge she was glad he was going to be where he could get help.

Calling the crime “egregious,” Allen Superior Judge Fran Gull said Jenkins was lucky his mother hadn’t died that day, saying she had an “angel on her shoulder.”
