Pope, Lorde honored

MTV’s college channel has gone in two wildly different directions in naming Pope Francis and pop singer Lorde as its man and woman of the year.

MTVU said Tuesday that both figures challenged their followers with unexpected stands.

Since becoming pope, Francis has urged the Catholic Church not to become obsessed with “small-minded rules” and to emphasize compassion over condemnation in dealing with touchy topics like abortion, gays and contraception.

The New Zealand teenager Lorde released a debut single, “Royals,” that puts down a culture of conspicuous consumption, and distributed it first for free.

Cash album due

There’s new never-before-heard music coming from Johnny Cash.

On March 25, Cash’s estate is releasing “Out Among the Stars,” an album he recorded with Billy Sherrill in the early 1980s that was never released by Columbia Records, then disappeared when the company dropped Cash in 1986. Turns out Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, stashed the tapes.

Cash died 10 years ago at age 71.

The 12 tracks include a duet with Waylon Jennings and two with June Carter Cash.

A solo career

Thanks to her role on Fox’s “Glee,” Lea Michele is no stranger to recording music. Now she’s ready to launch her solo music career.

The 27-year-old will release her debut album, “Louder,” on March 4.

The first single, “Cannonball,” written by Sia, is available for download.

Devilish miniseries

“Rosemary’s Baby,” the classic novel and film about a woman carrying the devil’s baby, is getting a modern updating and a change of scenery. On Tuesday, NBC announced it was green-lighting a four-hour miniseries based on Ira Levin’s novel, which also served as the basis for Roman Polanski’s 1968 film starring Mia Farrow.
