Fort Wayne native Saalfrank makes pro debut

Larkin Saalfrank, a native of Fort Wayne and a former IPFW goaltender, made his professional regular-season debut today with the Federal Hockey League's Danville Dashers.

He allowed three goals in 32 minutes, 58 seconds, after coming in during the second period of a 6-3 loss at Dayton.

The box hasn't been updated to reflect this, so I can't tell you exact save numbers.

He was in training camp this year with the Komets.

I believe he's the first Fort Wayne-bred goaltender to play in the pros since Brian Gratz, unless you count the Komets' Cody Reichard, who grew up in Celina, Ohio, but played his youth hockey here.

Justin A. Cohn, pro sports coordinator for The Journal Gazette, has been covering the Fort Wayne Komets since 1997. His reporting includes game stories from home and away, features about the players and personalities associated with the Komets, plus coverage of issues affecting hockey at all levels. A native of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Cohn graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. He can be reached at 260-461-8429 or by email at jcohn@jg.net.
