Way of the world
The backlash is growing as more and more retail operations announce plans to open on Thanksgiving Day. Walmart was first to jump the Black Friday starting line last year, with Macy’s, Target and many others joining this year.
Retail employees are not all pleased with the holiday intrusion. Online petitions at Change.org are registering protests from shoppers and employees of Target, Simon Property Group stores and more.
I believe that holidays should be shared with families and with those people who need our help and support, especially those without families, writes Milford resident Lee Gardner on the petition aimed at Target. Stores do not need to be open on special holidays.
But Richard Feinberg, a professor in the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing at Purdue and the director of the Center for Customer-Driven Quality, said stores have little choice. If they don’t get a piece of that pie on Thanksgiving, he said, somebody else may get it.
The online petitions might be effective for venting frustration, but stores will continue to open on Thanksgiving as long as customers are waiting to enter.
