Monroeville driver, 21, dies in crash

A 21-year-old driver who wasn't wearing his seat belt died Saturday night when he crashed his car and was ejected from the vehicle, according to a statement from the Allen County coroner's office.

The victim, Derek Franz of Monroeville, crashed in the 17000 block of Hoagland Road around 10:30 p.m. and died of blunt force trauma at the scene, the county coroner's office said.

Franz was the only person in the car, and his car was the only vehicle involved in the crash, the statement said. That stretch of Hoagland is in rural Allen County southeast of I-469.

Police said alcohol might have been a factor in the crash, and toxicology results were pending. They are still investigating. The coroner's office said the victim was not wearing a seatbelt.

Franz is the 30th traffic fatality for Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2013.
