TinCaps' Jose Valentin promoted to Padres

SAN DIEGO – Jose Valentin, who managed the TinCaps the past two season, was named the San Diego Padres first base coach Monday.

He replaces Dave Roberts, who was promoted to bench coach.

Roberts, who had been first base coach the last three seasons, replaces Rick Renteria, who was hired as manager of the Chicago Cubs on Nov. 7.

Valentín led the Padres’ Midwest League entry into the playoffs in both years with Fort Wayne.

During his 16-year career as an infielder, he played for Milwaukee, the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets. He was signed by the Padres out of Puerto Rico as a non-drafted free agent in 1986, playing five seasons in the system before being dealt to Milwaukee in 1992 in the trade that brought Gary Sheffield to San Diego.
