How the Dow Jones industrial average did Monday

The Dow Jones industrial average broke through 16,000 and the Standard & Poor's 500 pierced 1,800. But neither index was able to hold onto those two milestones through the close, and only the Dow finished up for the day.

The Dow gained 14.32 points, or 0.09 percent, to close at 15,976.02.

The S&P 500 index fell 6.65 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,791.53.

The Nasdaq composite fell 36.90 points, or 0.9 percent, to 3,949.07.

For the year:

The Dow is up 2,871.88 points, or 21.9 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 365.34 points, or 25.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 929.56 points, or 30.8 percent.
