News Summary: US stocks hit milestones, then slip

The Associated Press

MILESTONES: The Dow Jones index rose above 16,000 and the Standard & Poor's 500 above 1,800, big markers in a historic bull market. By the day's end, though, both indexes slipped below those levels.

DOW STREAK: The Dow closed up just 0.09 percent. But Monday's gain puts the index up 22 percent so far this year. The last time the Dow had a bigger gain for a whole year was in 2003.

CAN IT LAST?: Stocks have been rising for 56 months. That's about the average duration of bull markets, but there's hope. The 1990s bull market lasted 113 months.
