Starfires fall in Class A regional

South Adams’ unexpected run through the Class A playoffs ended with a 28-7 home loss Friday to No. 8 Tri-Central in the regional.

The Starfires (5-7) turned things around in the postseason after losing their final six games of the regular season.

Last week, South Adams defeated Southwood 40-39 in overtime to win its first sectional championship since 1996.

“It’s a tribute to our seniors, the school and our community,” first-year South Adams coach Rick Burkhalter said of getting to the regional. “They bought into playing for one another.”

The Trojans (12-1) broke open a close game with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

South Adams tied the score at 7 in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Drew LeFever.

But Tri-Central converted on a fake punt and eventually got the game-winner on a 23-yard pass from Cody Howell to Seth Blunck to lead 14-7 at halftime.

“It changed the momentum in the first half,” Burkhalter said of the fake punt. “Coming back out in the second half, they just made some plays, and we didn’t.”

The Starfires managed 81 yards rushing and 72 yards passing.
